「get wind of 〜」の意味とは？風をゲットする？ - 噂をかぎつける【日常英会話】

みなさん、こんにちは。

今週末のレッスンは天気についておこなう予定なので、みなさんが使える天気にまつわる表現をご紹介します。

「Get wind of ~」とは、(大抵の場合)故意に隠されているなにかについて、聞いたり気づいたりすることです。

例）

I was trying to keep our trip to the UK this summer a secret from my kids to surprise them but somehow they got wind of it and the surprise has been ruined.
(私はこの夏のイギリス旅行について、驚かせようと思ってこどもたちには内緒にしていたのに、なぜか噂をかぎつけて、サプライズが台無しになりました。)

The police got wind of the robber’s plans to rob the jeweller’s and he was caught red handed.
(警察は窃盗犯が宝石店を強盗する計画に気付き、犯人は現行犯逮捕されました。)

Since we are talking about the weather in class this weekend here is a nice weather idiom that you can use. 

Get wind of means to hear about or become aware of something, usually something that is being deliberately concealed. 

Example

“I was trying to keep our trip to the UK this summer a secret from my kids to surprise them but somehow they got wind of it and the surprise has been ruined. “

“The police got wind of the robber’s plans to rob the jeweller’s and he was caught red handed.”
