「Go well with」ってどういう意味？【日常英会話】
みなさん、こんにちは。
今日は英語で非常によく使われるフレーズ “go well with” についてお話しします。
多くの生徒さんがこの表現の代わりに “match” という言葉を使いますが、英語では少し不自然に聞こえます。
おそらく「合う」という日本語を直訳しているからだと思いますが、以前のブログでも言ったように、他の言語から直訳するとたまにカオスを招くことがあります…！
“Go well with”の意味
“Go well with” は、あるものが他のものを引き立てる、補完するという意味です。
この表現は、食べ物について話すときによく使われますが、服装や色、質感などについても使うことができます。
[例文]
Salt and vinegar goes well with French fries.
(塩と酢はフライドポテトと合います。)
Red wine goes well with steak.
(赤ワインはステーキと合います。)
Those shoes go really well with your jeans.
(その靴はジーンズにとても合いますね。)
Chocolate sauce doesn’t go well with cheeseburgers.
(チョコレートソースはチーズバーガーとは合いません。)
I don’t like my new shoes. They looked nice on the shelf but they don’t really go well with any of my clothes.
(新しい靴が気に入りません。お店で見た時は素敵に見えたけど、どの服にも合わないんです。)

“Go well with” に似た表現
“Go hand in hand”
For me there is nothing better than my morning coffee and a smoke. The two go hand in hand as far as I’m concerned.
(私にとって、朝のコーヒーと一服ほどいいものはありません。私の中でこの二つは切り離せないものです。)
“Go together”
I’ve never really understood why people put sugar in tea. The two just don’t go together for me.
(人々がなぜ紅茶に砂糖を入れるのか、私は理解したことがありません。個人的にその二つは合わないんです。)

“Go well with” という表現は、味や質感、色など、互いに上手く組み合わせられるものについて話すときに使い、 “matchよりも自然な表現です。

Today we are going to talk about a very commonly used phrase in English “go well with”. Most of my students will say “match” instead of this, which is understandable but sounds a bit unnatural in English. I imagine it is because people directly translate the word 合う and like I’ve said in previous blogs translating directly from your own language can lead to disastrous consequences!!
Meaning
“Go well with” means that one thing complements another. We often use it to talk about food but it can also be used to talk about clothing, colours, textures, and more.
Examples

So there you go. We use go well with to talk about things that accompany each other well such as tastes, textures, colours and more and it is more natural than saying match.
On a personal note, I have recently discovered something very British in a store near my house and that is the extremely salty and rather unique smelling spread known as marmite. I have been enjoying my mornings immensely after discovering it because nothing goes better together than toast dripping with butter, a thin spread of marmite and a nice cup of piping hot tea. Paradise!
