「typhoon」「hurricane」「cyclone」の違い

みなさんこんにちは。

先週は台風が上陸しましたが、皆さんがご無事だったことを祈ります。

英語を学習されている方にとって、「typhoon　hurricane　cyclone」の違いを理解するのは少し難しいかもしれません。

いったい何が違うのでしょうか？...実は、基本的には同じです。

ひとつ違う点を挙げるとしたら、発生場所です。

台風は太平洋、サイクロンはインド洋、ハリケーンは大西洋で発生します。ご理解頂けたでしょうか？

もうひとつ。

台風について話す時、生徒さんはこのフレーズを良く使うことに気づきました。

A typhoon attacked Japan last week.
(先週、台風が日本を襲った)

この表現、理解はできますが、少しおかしな響きです。

人や物を襲うには意志が必要ですが、私が知る限り台風は考えたりしないのです!!

A typhoon hit Japan last week.
(先週台風が日本を襲った。)

Japan was hit by a typhoon last week.
(先週、日本は台風に襲われた。)

これらがより自然な表現です。

Hello there everyone, 

Hope you are all safe and sound after last week’s typhoon. As English learners you may have some difficulty discerning between the terms typhoon, hurricane, and cyclone. What’s the difference, well, basically nothing. The only difference is where the storm forms. Typhoons are in the West Pacific Ocean, Cyclones in the Indian Ocean, and Hurricanes, in the Atlantic Ocean. Hope that clears it up for you. 

One more thing.

I’ve noticed my students use this phrase a lot when talking about typhoons.

“A typhoon attacked Japan last week.” 

It is understandable but sound a bit funny. To attack someone or something requires the will to do so and as far as I know typhoons don’t think! 

“ A typhoon hit Japan last week.”   
“ Japan was hit by a typhoon last week.”

These are more natural ways to say it.
